Therapy Talks #6: What Our Therapy Team Offers & Family Involvement

Family Involvement in Therapy

In the latest episode of Therapy Talks, Dr Paula and Dr Laurie explain our approach to child autism therapy and how we prioritise children’s therapy within a children’s residential home. We cover how our dedicated therapy team provides specialised support for young people with learning disabilities. We work exclusively with children placed in our residential children’s homes, ensuring they receive the individualized care they need in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our Approach to Child-Centered Therapy

Our therapy team takes a multi-disciplinary approach, offering a range of assessments and interventions tailored to each young person’s unique needs. We focus on helping children develop essential skills in communication, behavior, and daily living while providing a supportive and structured therapeutic environment.

1. Comprehensive Assessments for Holistic Support

Our therapy team conducts thorough assessments to understand each child’s challenges and strengths. We offer specialized support in:

  • Occupational therapy – Helping children improve motor skills and independence.
  • Psychological support – Providing emotional and mental health support.
  • Speech and language therapy – Assisting with communication and social interaction.
  • Behavioral support – Addressing challenges through structured interventions.

By assessing each child’s needs holistically, we create a personalized therapeutic plan that fosters growth and development.

2. Family Collaboration in Therapy

We recognize the importance of family involvement in a child’s development. While our therapy services are available only to children placed in our residential homes, we actively engage with families to provide insights and support, including:

  • Regular family consultations to discuss progress and strategies.
  • Parental guidance on how to support their child’s development at home.
  • Ongoing communication to keep families informed and involved.

3. Behavioral Monitoring with ABC Charts

For children with complex behavioral needs, we use ABC charts to track behavior patterns and implement effective strategies for support:

  • A – Antecedents: Identifying triggers that lead to certain behaviors.
  • B – Behavior: Observing and understanding responses.
  • C – Consequence: Adjusting support strategies to encourage positive outcomes.

This approach allows us to provide individualized behavioral interventions that help children thrive.

4. Specialist Support Within Our Residential Homes

Our therapy services are exclusively available to young people placed in our children’s residential homes. This ensures that every child receives prompt, high-quality care tailored to their specific needs, without the long wait times often associated with external therapy services.

5. Ongoing Support for Young People in Residential Care

Moving into a children’s residential home can be a significant transition for young people and their families. Our therapy team provides consistent, structured support to help children adapt, develop essential skills, and build confidence in their daily lives.
